Stakeholder Engagement

Stakeholders are those who are, or could be, affected by our operations.

We believe strongly that our continued success is dependent on our ability to communicate with and engage our stakeholders – including customers, landowners, communities, government officials, regulators, non-governmental organizations, suppliers, analysts, media and shareholders. Every day, across the organization, our employees interact with a wide range of communities and stakeholders that are affected by our business. In each of these interactions, our goal is to demonstrate our charter values of win-win relationships, safety, respect for the individual, integrity, stewardship, initiative and high performance.

Our Stakeholder Engagement Principles, developed to guide our interactions, are as follows:

  • We will be respectful of and considerate to all stakeholders.
  • We will engage with those affected by our business.
  • We will consider stakeholder-identified issues in our decision-making process.
  • We will provide timely and accurate communication using accessible information and language.
  • We will be transparent in our processes and communications.

Having established principles and knowing where, when and how to engage with external stakeholders is critical to our business success and demonstrates our commitment to making Spectra Energy the “Company of Choice.”

Our Stakeholder Outreach activities are company-wide and customized for each activity and project. To ensure dialogue with our Stakeholders, we rely on face-to-face meetings, open houses, websites, newspapers, radio and individual letters sent via mail. We have two main categories for Stakeholder interaction:

During Operations

Spectra Energy’s operations and maintenance activities are conducted on both daily and annual basis, as required by government regulations. We routinely communicate to existing Stakeholders through our public awareness programs.

These programs highlight safety messages to third-party contractors digging near our facilities and landowners who assist us by notifying us of any suspicious activity near our facilities. Other pipeline awareness messages include the benefits, use and traits of natural gas. We also include safety and emergency response information.

During Project Development

Our incremental and new expansion projects are developed as the market demands and our customers’ needs change. These projects are subject to government approval.

During project development, Stakeholder consultation is critical because many along the proposed route may not be familiar with natural gas pipelines or Spectra Energy. Implementing a successful consultation plan is dependent on our ability to explain a project’s benefits, impacts, the mitigation of potential impacts and, whenever possible, how each question or concern could be addressed.
