Our Sustainability Strategy
Building Sustainable Value for Our Stakeholders…
When we launched as Spectra Energy in 2007, we began foundation-setting endeavors – collecting and analyzing data, setting metrics and formalizing our commitments – to develop a strong, effective sustainability strategy that would leverage existing practices and drive improved performance across our businesses. We are implementing our strategy across all regions and functional areas, and together we will create lasting, meaningful value for all we serve.
Our Sustainability Commitments
We are focusing on the areas that best support our business strategy and are most relevant to our stakeholders. The commitments listed below give an overview of the areas that most impact our stakeholders. Deliver Superior Economic Results
Our economic responsibility is to prosper as a business – providing safe, reliable and cost-effective service for our customers while generating superior value for our investors. In meeting this responsibility, we also contribute significantly to society, which requires safe, reliable energy and relies on healthy businesses to support a strong economy. We are dedicated to delivering superior value to our investors and executing our capital expansion projects while maintaining a strong balance sheet.
Ensure Strong Corporate Governance and Business Ethics
We understand the value of sound ethics and governance, and we will conduct our business with integrity, transparency and accountability. Our effective governance and management systems will ensure we comply with the letter and intent of laws, rules and regulations applicable to our business and adhere to all company policies and procedures.
Operate Responsibly, Reliably and Safely
Responsible, reliable and safe operations are essential for creating superior and sustainable value for our investors, customers, employees and communities. Public safety is a top priority, and we invest in the maintenance of our assets, electronically monitor them around the clock, regularly patrol our pipeline system and have field personnel living near our facilities. We strive for continuous improvement in our safety performance and a safety culture in which every employee and contractor starts each day with a sense of purpose and ends each day safely with a sense of accomplishment.
Protect the Environment
Throughout our business plans, we are integrating environmental performance improvement in the areas that matter most to our stakeholders and our business: minimizing our environmental footprint, taking a progressive approach to climate change and championing energy conservation. Our challenge is to minimize the impact of our operations while growing our business.
More project information is available in public documents, including environmental and social impact assessments, filed with governmental regulatory agencies. Project-related filings are accessible through the U.S. Federal Regulatory Commission’s eLibrary and the Canadian National Energy Board’s Regulatory Document Index.
Value and Energize Our People
We are building a high performance, diverse organization that promotes our employees’ health, safety and wellbeing. We want to be the employer of choice for our industry and beyond so that we attract the talented workforce we need to fuel our growth. To that end we continue to build a positive work environment that taps the unique talents of our diverse workers, encourages their development and inspires their commitment to our mission of delivering important energy services.
Support and Engage Our Communities
As a responsible, responsive corporate steward, we respect the unique qualities the communities where we live and work, and we contribute on many levels. We engage communities and our stakeholders, deliver cost-effective energy services, employ thousands, spur local economic development, encourage employee volunteerism and direct corporate philanthropy to pressing community needs.
